Bratislava at the Weekend or on a Weekday: When to Come

Michalská Street in the Old Town with Michael's Gate and people walking
In short: Not everything in Bratislava closes on the same day. Devín Castle, the Old Town Hall, the Slovak National Gallery and the Bratislava City Gallery are all closed on Monday, but the exhibitions at Bratislava Castle close on Tuesday. You will find the most places open at once from Wednesday to Sunday. The weekend brings the Saturday market at the Old Market Hall and, in autumn, two boats a day to Devín, while in November the boat runs only at weekends. Always check the times before your visit.

Bratislava at the weekend feels different from a Wednesday morning, and it is not just a question of crowds. What matters most is which sights are closed on a given day, when the boats run on the Danube and what happens in the city only on Saturday. If you come for a long weekend from Friday to Monday, you may find half the museums closed on your last day, even though the castle will be open for you on Monday. Below is an overview of the days of the week, checked against the official websites of the sights in October 2026, along with three ready-made plans for your stay depending on when you arrive.

Bratislava at the Weekend and on Weekdays: What Is the Difference

When choosing a date, most people look at the month, that is, whether it will be warm and whether there is a festival on in the city. That is what our article The Best Time to Visit Bratislava covers, comparing the individual months. Yet the day of the week changes your plans just as much, and people usually only notice it when they are standing in front of a locked gate.

During the working week the city is mostly full of people who live and work here, while at weekends day-trippers and short-stay visitors join them. On Saturday and Sunday, public transport runs to the non-working-day timetable, which Dopravný podnik Bratislava (the city transport company) also uses on public holidays, so look up your connection in the app before you set off rather than relying on the weekday frequency.[8]

The biggest difference, however, comes from the days on which the sights close, and in Bratislava these do not line up. Most museums and galleries take Monday off, but the exhibitions at Bratislava Castle close on Tuesday. You can build an entire plan around this small detail.

Which Sight Is Closed on Which Day

The table sums up the main places that visitors to Bratislava plan for most often. The details come from the official websites as of October 2026 and may change during public holidays or exhibitions, so check them before your visit.

PlaceClosedOpenWhat to watch out for
Bratislava Castle, SNM exhibitionsTuesdayWednesday to Monday, 10:00 to 18:00last entry at 17:00; the castle grounds are open daily from 8:00 to 22:00[1]
Devín CastleMondayTuesday to Sunday, in October 10:00 to 17:00from November to February until 16:00, last entry 45 minutes before closing[3]
Old Town Hall, Bratislava City MuseumMondayTuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00last entry half an hour before closing[2]
Slovak National GalleryMondayTuesday to Sunday, mostly 10:00 to 18:00on Thursday it opens at 12:00 and stays open until 20:00[4]
Bratislava City GalleryMondayTuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 18:00opens later than the other museums[5]
Boat from Bratislava to Devín and backMonday, in autumn also Tuesdayfrom 19 Sept to 31 Oct, Wednesday to Sunday at 9:00, at weekends also at 14:00in November only at weekends at 9:00; when the Danube is low, the sailing may be cancelled[6]
Saturday market at the Old Market HallMonday to Fridayevery Saturday, 9:00 to 15:00the market is held only on Saturday; on public holidays check the date on the market hall's website[7]

The table gives you a simple rule worth remembering: Monday belongs to the castle and to walks, Tuesday to everything except the castle exhibitions. Stick to this rule and you won't lose a single day of your stay standing in front of closed doors.

Monday: the day the castle is open

Monday tends to be written off as a lost day when planning a trip, but in Bratislava that is exactly when the castle exhibitions are open. In the morning it is worth heading up Castle Hill, in the afternoon you can explore the Old Town on foot, and the evening is best saved for the riverfront, since Devín, the Old Town Hall and the galleries are all closed. A tour of the centre with no admission fees is described in the article Bratislava for Free, which suits a Monday best.

Tuesday: everything except the castle exhibitions

On Tuesday the situation is reversed, because Devín, the Old Town Hall and both galleries are open, while the exhibitions at the castle are closed. The castle grounds with the courtyard and terraces stay open on Tuesday too, though, so you won't miss the view of the Danube, only the indoor exhibitions. In autumn, bear in mind that the boat to Devín does not run on Tuesday either, so take the bus there instead.

Wednesday to Friday: The Most Open Doors

From Wednesday to Friday every place in the table is open except the Saturday market, which makes these three days the best choice if you want to fit as many museums as possible into a short stay. On top of that, from 19 September to the end of October the morning boat to Devín runs from Wednesday, so you can combine a trip upstream with a visit to the castle and be back in town for lunch.[6]

Thursday has one advantage that is easy to overlook: that day the Slovak National Gallery stays open until 20:00.[4] You can therefore spend the day outdoors and go to the gallery only in the early evening, which pays off especially in winter, when it gets dark early and outdoor plans end in the afternoon.

If busy streets bother you, have a look at the article Bratislava Without the Crowds, which looks at what time of day to go to the castle, to Devín or to the Old Town. A weekday combined with the right hour works better than either one on its own.

What Only the Weekend Offers

The weekend has its own reasons to come, and some of them you simply won't experience on a weekday. The most notable is the Saturday market at the Old Market Hall on SNP Square, held every Saturday from 9:00 to 15:00.[7] It is a good choice for a late breakfast or lunch, and the Old Town is only a few minutes' walk from the market hall.

The second reason is the boats. In autumn, weekends have two sailings a day to Devín, at 9:00 and at 14:00, and in November the boat runs only on Saturday and Sunday at 9:00.[6] So if you want to reach Devín by water in late autumn, you have to come at the weekend. Prices, journey times and other routes on the Danube are compared in our article Danube Boat Cruise from Bratislava.

On a weekend stay, keep transport in mind as well, because public transport runs to the non-working-day timetable on Saturday and Sunday, so leave yourself some slack when planning the trip to Devín or to the airport.[8] On a long weekend that includes a public holiday, some sights also close, for example the Old Town Hall and Devín on Christmas Eve and over Christmas, which the article Bratislava on Public Holidays covers in detail.[2][3]

Three Stay Plans by Arrival Day

The following plans are based on the opening days in the table above and assume that you arrive in the morning or before noon. If you only arrive in the evening, shift everything by one day and start with day two.

StayDay oneDay twoDay three
Friday to Sundaythe castle and its exhibitions, the Old Town in the eveningSaturday market at the Old Market Hall, the Old Town Hall or a gallery in the afternoonmorning boat to Devín (in autumn and November), the riverfront in the afternoon
Sunday to Tuesdayboat or bus to Devín, the centre in the eveningMonday: the castle and its exhibitions, a walk through the city with no admission feesTuesday: the Old Town Hall and the galleries, the castle only from outside
Wednesday to Fridaymorning boat to Devín, the Old Town in the afternoonthe castle in the morning, the Slovak National Gallery in the evening until 20:00the Old Town Hall and the Bratislava City Gallery, then departure

On a stay from Friday to Sunday everything is open, so all you need to do is give Saturday to the market and spread the rest according to the weather. If you extend the weekend by a Monday, save the castle for it, because Devín, the Old Town Hall and the galleries will be closed. On a stay from Sunday to Tuesday, on the other hand, it is best not to put Devín on the Monday, as you will find the gate closed. If you only have two days, take inspiration from the article Bratislava in 48 Hours and shift its programme according to the table.

Accommodation on Weekdays and at Weekends

Accommodation prices in Bratislava are not fixed and change with the date and demand, so a Friday night and a Wednesday night in the same apartment may not cost the same. With us, the price is calculated automatically for your specific dates, so compare the days directly in the calendar on the apartment's page and choose the ones that work out better for you.

If your plans centre on the castle and the Old Town, it is practical to stay close by. CASTE on Zámocká Street is right next to Bratislava Castle and has a free garage, so you can leave the car parked for your whole stay. For a business trip during the week that you want to extend into the weekend, BRIS on Prístavná Street in the business district is a good fit, with self check-in for when you arrive late after work. You will find everything on offer in the overview of our apartments.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is it better to visit Bratislava on a weekday or at the weekend?

If you want to see as many museums as possible, pick the days from Wednesday to Friday, when the castle, Devín, the Old Town Hall and the galleries are all open. The weekend is worth it for the Saturday market in the Old Market Hall and for the boats to Devín, which in autumn run twice a day at weekends and in November only on Saturday and Sunday.

Is Bratislava Castle open on Monday?

Yes. The Slovak National Museum exhibitions at Bratislava Castle are open from Wednesday to Monday, 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:00, and they are closed on Tuesday. The castle grounds with the courtyard and terraces are open daily from 8:00 to 22:00. Check the times on the SNM website before your visit.

Which museums in Bratislava are closed on Monday?

On Monday, Devín Castle, the Old Town Hall with the exhibition of the Bratislava City Museum, the Slovak National Gallery and the Bratislava City Gallery are all closed. The exception is the exhibitions at Bratislava Castle, which are open on Monday and close on Tuesday.

Does the boat from Bratislava to Devín also run on weekdays?

It depends on the time of year. From 16 May to 18 September the boat runs daily except Monday, from 19 September to 31 October from Wednesday to Sunday at 9:00 and at weekends also at 14:00, and in November only at weekends at 9:00. When the Danube is low, sailings may be limited or cancelled, so check the date with the operator before you go.

When is the market at the Old Market Hall in Bratislava?

The Saturday market at the Old Market Hall on SNP Square takes place every Saturday from 9:00 to 15:00. There is no market on weekdays, so if you want to experience it, plan your stay to include a Saturday.

Conclusion

The difference between Bratislava on a weekday and at the weekend is not whether the city is better or worse, but what you can fit in on a given day. From Wednesday to Friday almost everything is open, the weekend adds the market and more boats, and Monday and Tuesday won't spoil your plans as long as you know that the castle closes on Tuesday and the other museums on Monday. Once you have your days sorted, all that is left is to choose accommodation from which you can reach both the castle and Devín without any hassle.
