The figures help you judge whether the resort is a good match. Donovaly is not a high-alpine resort with dozens of kilometres of pistes, but it is densely equipped: 16 lifts serve 11 kilometres of slopes, so queues tend to be shorter than the size of the area would suggest.

Záhradište or Nová hoľa: Which One Suits Your Level
This is the single most important thing to know about Donovaly. The resort is not one continuous slope but two areas with a different character, each with its own cable car and its own type of skier.
Záhradište: beginners, children and night skiing
The lower part of the resort, served by the Buly Express four-seat chairlift. According to the Lanovky.sk database it is about 595 metres long with a vertical rise of just 117 metres and carries 2,400 people per hour.[2] The modest vertical is an advantage here: the slopes are gentle and easy to read, and a child or a beginner will not run into an unpleasant surprise. Most of the 14 lifts are clustered around this chairlift, and Záhradište is also where the floodlit evening skiing takes place. You will find the Riders park snowpark here too, with obstacles of varying difficulty.
Nová hoľa: longer runs and more vertical
The second section climbs to the summit of Nová hoľa (1,361 m) and is served by the combined TELEMIX lift, which alternates six-seat chairs with eight-person gondola cabins. It is around 1,312 metres long with a vertical rise of 444 metres and a capacity of 2,569 people per hour.[2] The Nová hoľa I and II runs are among the longest in the resort (both over 2 kilometres) and suit intermediate to advanced skiers.[1] The combined lift has a practical benefit: anyone who does not fancy an open chair in freezing weather can simply wait for a cabin.
The practical takeaway: if your group includes a child or a complete beginner, build the day around Záhradište and slip over to Nová hoľa once the rest of the group is settled. Treat the transfer between the two areas as a separate item in your plan, not as a couple of minutes.
With Children and Beginners
Donovaly positions itself as a family resort and the numbers back that up: 13 of the 18 runs are easy. The key facility for the youngest skiers is the FUN PARK, a teaching area that the resort describes as the largest in Central Europe. It covers 12,500 m² and is equipped with nine magic carpets and a motorised carousel.[1]
What this means for a parent: your child does not have to ride a drag lift on day one. A three-year-old can handle a magic carpet, and you do not have to assist with every trip back up. That is the difference between a first day the child enjoys and a first day after which they never want to put skis on again.
- 🎿 Ski school: several ski schools operate in Donovaly, but book lessons in advance – over the holidays and during the spring school break capacity fills up.
- ⏱️ Keep the first day short: with small children it makes sense to plan two shorter sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, instead of a single long block.
- 🧣 Somewhere to change: staying within walking distance of the slope lets you pop home for lunch or to dry out gloves, which is impossible from a hotel a few kilometres away.
- 🎭 A day off the skis: when the weather turns bad or the children have had enough, Donovaly has the seasonal fairy-tale village Habakuky, with little houses based on the tales of Pavol Dobšinský. Opening hours are seasonal, so check before you go.[3]
Ski Passes, Night Skiing and Cross-Country
PARK SNOW sells ski passes in several formats: hourly, full-day, multi-day and seasonal, with online purchase usually cheaper than at the ticket window. Specific prices for the 2026/2027 season had not been published at the time of writing, so we deliberately do not quote them here. Night skiing is one of the things Donovaly does well. There are 1.8 kilometres of floodlit runs and the resort lists opening hours from 8:30 to 21:00.[1] The floodlit slope is usually in Záhradište. Check the price list to see whether evening skiing is included in your type of pass – it is often tied to the length of the pass.
Do not overlook cross-country skiing either: 18.4 kilometres of groomed trails is more than the resort has downhill slopes.[1] If one of you is a downhill skier and the other prefers cross-country, Donovaly solves that without a compromise.
What the Snow Is Like Mid-Season
Donovaly sits between 910 and 1,361 metres, which by European standards is mid-altitude. It is precisely this band where snow cover is most sensitive to temperature swings. A large-scale analysis of satellite data from the Romanian Carpathians covering 2000 to 2025 (Ioniță et al., Remote Sensing, 2026) found that the snow season across the whole range is shortening by an average of 1.14 days per year, and that changes are small at high elevations above 2,000 metres, while the sharpest shortening occurs at low and medium altitudes.[5]
Two practical conclusions follow for planning a stay. First: snowmaking on roughly 8.8 kilometres of runs is not a marketing line but the thing that holds the season together at resorts of this altitude. Second: choose your dates by the current snow reports, not by the calendar. The resort publishes the snow depth and the number of open lifts daily, as does the Holidayinfo portal with webcams pointed straight at the slope.[6]
The Drive from Bratislava and Parking
Donovaly is roughly 230 kilometres from Bratislava, which usually means about two and a half hours of driving. The route follows the R1 expressway via Nitra and Žiar nad Hronom to Banská Bystrica and then road I/59 towards Ružomberok.
Two things lengthen the journey and are worth planning for:
- 🚗 Through traffic: the resort lies directly on the main corridor between Banská Bystrica and northern Slovakia. Transit traffic crosses the mountain pass as well, so on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons it gets busy regardless of the skiing.
- ❄️ Winter equipment: stricter rules apply on the mountain pass in winter. Check road conditions before you leave – drifting snow can slow the section down even when it is dry in Bratislava.
- 🅿️ Parking at the lifts: by around nine in the morning the car parks at the bottom stations are full over the holidays. Accommodation with its own parking space removes the problem entirely.
