Most people know Donovaly as a ski resort, so between April and December they simply skip it in the calendar. Yet Donovaly in summer and autumn offers a different kind of stay: mountain meadows at around a thousand metres, marked trails that start right in the resort, cycling for children as well as experienced riders, and a cable car that carries you up to a summit with views of the Low Tatras and the Veľká Fatra. This article is not a list of attractions but a plan by season, because this is exactly where visitors most often get it wrong: they turn up on a Wednesday in October and find out the cable car only runs at weekends.

What Is Open in Which Month
The summer operation in Donovaly is not one continuous block from May to October, but three periods with different scope. The PARK SNOW resort lists a main season from June to August, when it is open daily, and an extended season in September and October, when the TELEMIX cable car to Nová hoľa runs only on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 to 17:00 and the Riders Park bike park from Friday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. From November to May the summer operation is closed.[1] Two other places that bring families and hikers here have their own dates, so we have put them all in one table.
| Period | TELEMIX cable car, Nová hoľa | Habakuky | Kalište exhibition |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | summer operation closed | school trip season from 18 May | Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 |
| June | main season, daily | school trips until 26 June | Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 |
| July and August | main season, daily | daily from 10:00 (1 July to 30 August 2026) | Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 |
| September | Saturday and Sunday 8:00 to 17:00 | closed | Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 |
| October | Saturday and Sunday 8:00 to 17:00 | closed | closed |
| November | closed | closed | closed |
The data comes from the operators' websites and applies to 2026.[1][6][7] The resort explicitly warns that opening hours can change with the weather and operating conditions, so check them at parksnow.sk before you go. The table gives you a simple rule: if you want the cable car and Habakuky together, you need to come in July or August, and if you are coming in autumn, plan the cable car for a weekend.
Hiking Straight From the Resort
The biggest advantage of Donovaly outside winter is that you do not need a car to go hiking. The resort lists six marked routes from a single starting point, from easy walks to Kalište or Korytnica that take about an hour and a half, up to demanding all-day crossings to Špania Dolina or over Zvolen to Liptovské Revúce.[3] The routes lead through meadows and forests and past former mining settlements, so each one shows you a different piece of the Veľká Fatra and its surroundings.
- ⛰️ Zvolen (1,403 m), about an hour up. The red-marked trail takes you from the main road between the houses into the forest, then straight across a meadow to the saddle between Nová hoľa and Zvolen. The climb is not demanding and takes roughly an hour.[5] From the saddle itself you can already see the Low Tatras with Prašivá and the Chochuľa peaks, Salatín, Veľký Choč and, when visibility is good, even Kriváň.[5] If you have energy to spare, you can carry on to Malý Zvolen.
- 🕯️ Kalište, a memorial walk. The settlement, at 924 metres, was burned down on 18 March 1945 and life there was never restored. The foundations of the houses, the cemetery and two cottages with a chapel remain to this day.[7] It is a National Cultural Monument, and the exhibition on the Slovak National Uprising is open from May to September, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, with free admission.[7]
- 🌲 Korytnica and Šachtička. Two more routes that the resort lists among its marked trails are suited to a shorter outing, when you only have half a day or when there is fog higher up.[3]
When planning, bear in mind that Donovaly sits in a saddle at around a thousand metres above sea level, and the ridge tends to be colder and windier than the resort below. Even for the one-hour hike up Zvolen it pays to take a windproof jacket and wear hiking boots, because the climb across the meadow is slippery after rain. We applied the same principle, choosing a route by how much time and energy you have, in our article on day trips from Bratislava.
The Nová Hoľa Cable Car Outside Winter
Outside winter, too, the TELEMIX combined cable car takes you to the summit of Nová hoľa (1,361 m), with six-seater chairs alternating with eight-person cabins. According to the resort, the summit opens up a panorama of the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra and Zvolen, and in good weather the Western Tatras with Kriváň as well. It also describes the cable car as a starting point for hiking, paragliding and cycling routes, and there is a kiosk at the top.[2]
For your stay this means the cable car lets you spend a day on the ridge without climbing up from the bottom station, which families with younger children and older hikers will especially appreciate. In cooler autumn weather the cabin has one practical advantage: you are not riding on an open chair in the wind. Do remember the table above, though: in September and October the cable car runs only at weekends, and from November it stands still until the ski season begins.[1] We cover the same cable car and the difference between the Nová hoľa and Záhradište areas in our article on skiing in Donovaly.
Among its summer activities the resort also lists tandem paragliding flights and the Ferrata Dve veže via ferrata.[2] Check the conditions, dates and prices for both directly with the resort, since for flying and for the via ferrata alike, the weather matters more than the opening hours.
Cycling: From the Pump Track to All-Day Loops
Cycling in Donovaly splits into two completely different activities. The first is the Riders Park bike park in the Záhradište area, which opened its season on 27 June 2026, along with a pump track and skills zone. During the summer operation the pump track is open daily from 9:00 to 20:00, while the bike park itself runs only from Friday to Sunday in the extended season.[1] The bike and scooter rental is open at weekends from 9:45 to 17:15 and on weekdays on request, and lessons at the bike school are by reservation only.[1]
A one-day adult ticket for Riders Park costs EUR 26 online or EUR 29 at the ticket office from Monday to Thursday, and EUR 32 online or EUR 35 at the ticket office from Friday to Sunday. For children there is the Mini Bike Park at EUR 7 for two hours.[8] The prices are taken from the 2026 price list, so check them before you go.
The second activity is the cycling routes in the surrounding area, which need no ticket, just fitness and a suitable bike. The resort sorts them by difficulty:[4]
| Difficulty | Example routes from the resort | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| easy loops | around Magura, around Žiarsky vrch | families, leisure riders |
| moderate rides | to Šachtička, to Korytnica, to the Brankov waterfall | riders with mountain experience |
| all-day crossings | to Slovenská Ľupča via the Hladišské saddle, Vlkolínec and the Jazierce travertines | trained cyclists |
If you also cycle in the city, you will find a comparison of shared bikes and e-scooters in Bratislava in our article Bike or E-Scooter in Bratislava. In Donovaly, however, you are dealing with mountain terrain and real elevation gain, so a city bike will not do here and you need to bring or rent a mountain bike.
Donovaly With Kids: Habakuky and Children's Attractions
The best-known summer attraction for children is the Habakuky fairy-tale village, made up of little houses in a whimsical folk style inspired by the fairy tales of Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský. During the day there are theatre performances such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread House or The Three Little Pigs, and the grounds include swings, a craft workshop and a small museum of Dobšinský's fairy tales.[6]
Timing is what matters: in 2026 the main Habakuky season ran from 1 July to 30 August, open daily from 10:00, and the village is closed in very bad weather.[6] Outside the summer holidays it is closed to the public, and in spring it opens first for school trips. So if you are planning an autumn stay with children, do not count Habakuky in your programme.
Besides Habakuky, the resort's summer activities also include a children's bike park, a children's traffic playground and an e-scooter rental.[2] For a family with small children the most comfortable combination is the cable car up Nová hoľa, a short walk along the ridge and then, in the afternoon, the pump track or the traffic playground down in the resort. More ideas for things to do with children, this time in the city, are in our article Bratislava with Kids.
The Shoulder Season: October and November Without the Cable Car
October is the last month in Donovaly when you can combine the cable car with hiking, though only at weekends. November is one of the quietest times of the year, because the summer operation is closed and the ski season has not yet started.[1] For some that is a drawback, for others a reason to come, since the trails are empty and the stay is more about peace than attractions.
What works without restriction in the shoulder season is the marked hiking trails. The climb up Zvolen or the walk to Kalište does not depend on anything being open, only on the weather. At Kalište, however, bear in mind that the exhibition is open only from May to September.[7] In autumn the days shorten quickly, so set off earlier and remember that the first snow can arrive higher up sooner than down in the lowlands.
If you are deciding when to head for the mountains and when for the city, our overview of Bratislava in autumn will help too. If you want to combine both places in one trip around Slovakia, you will find a ready-made plan in our article First Visit to Slovakia.
Where to Stay: An Apartment by the Cable Car
Outside winter, choosing accommodation in Donovaly comes down to the same thing as in winter: the distance to the cable car and the trails. Our mountain apartment DONIO is in the AD Dono building, 20 metres from the Nová hoľa cable car, so you can set off for a hike or the lift on foot straight from the door. It has 50 m² for 1 to 4 people and a spacious terrace with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and outdoor seating, which in summer becomes the heart of your stay.
The apartment is on the ground floor with no stairs, a reserved parking space is free right in front of the building and the kitchen is fully equipped, which you will appreciate in the mountains when only a limited number of restaurants are open in the shoulder season. There is a washing machine, air conditioning with a heating function and contactless self check-in from 15:00 to 24:00. Pets are not allowed in the apartment. Available dates and the price for your specific stay are in the calendar on the DONIO apartment page.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does the cable car in Donovaly run in summer too?
Yes, the TELEMIX combined cable car takes you to the summit of Nová hoľa (1,361 m) outside winter as well. In the main season from June to August the resort is open daily, while in September and October the cable car runs only on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 to 17:00. From November until the start of the ski season the summer operation is closed. Opening hours can change with the weather, so check them at parksnow.sk.
When is the Habakuky village open?
In 2026 the main Habakuky season ran from 1 July to 30 August, open daily from 10:00. In spring the village opens for school trips, in 2026 from 18 May to 26 June. Outside these dates it is closed to the public, and in very bad weather it also closes during the season.
How long does it take to hike up Zvolen from Donovaly?
The climb to Zvolen (1,403 m) along the red-marked trail takes about an hour from Donovaly and is not demanding. The route leads from the main road between the houses into the forest and then across a meadow to the saddle between Nová hoľa and Zvolen, which looks out over the Low Tatras, Veľký Choč and, when visibility is good, Kriváň. Wear hiking boots, as the meadow is slippery after rain.
What can you do in Donovaly in November, when the cable car is not running?
In November the resort's summer operation is closed and the ski season has not yet started, so what remains is hiking on the marked trails. You can climb Zvolen or walk to Kalište all year round, although the exhibition in Kalište is open only from May to September. November suits a quiet stay without crowds, not a programme packed with attractions.
Can you rent a bike in Donovaly?
Yes, the resort has a bike and scooter rental. From Friday to Sunday it is open from 9:45 to 17:15, and from Monday to Thursday it works on request. Next to the rental there is also a service shop and a bike school, whose lessons are by reservation only. For the cycling routes in the surrounding area you need a mountain bike, because the terrain has considerable elevation gain.
Conclusion
Donovaly outside the ski season is worth it above all when you match your dates to what you want to do: in July and August everything is open, Habakuky included, in September and October it pays to come for a long weekend for the cable car, and in November you come mainly for peace and hiking. If you want the cable car and the trails right outside your door, take a look at the DONIO apartment or all 8 apartments in Bratislava and Donovaly.
