A day trip from Bratislava to Záhorie without a car has one advantage that the Little Carpathians on the other side lack: the whole journey can be built on two connections that link up the same way every day. The S20 train runs along the Záhorie line every hour, and in Malacky the regional bus 289 waits for it, ending right below Plavecký Castle. This article is not an overview of directions, we already have that in our piece on train trips from Bratislava. It is one ready-made day with departure times, a ticket table and a plan B in case something slips away from you. The times come from the IDS BK timetables valid from summer 2026, but check them in the app before you go, because regional lines change even in the middle of the year.

Why Plavecký Castle
Záhorie is a flat landscape between the Little Carpathians and the Morava river, starting right behind Devínska Nová Ves and stretching all the way to Kúty. A railway line with an hourly service leads into it from Bratislava, but most of the interesting destinations lie away from the tracks, so without a car you need one more connecting bus. We chose Plavecký Castle because it is the only destination in Záhorie where both the train and the bus run at the same rhythm all day, and the bus stop is literally called Pod hradom, "below the castle".[2]
The ruins themselves stand on a rocky ridge above the village of Plavecké Podhradie at an altitude of around 400 metres, and from afar they show up as a silhouette of towers amid the forests. Entry is free, the climb takes 40 minutes to an hour depending on your pace, and if you want more, you can continue to the Celtic hillfort of Pohanská or take the ten-kilometre Plavecký kras educational trail.[5] By comparison, Malacky is closer to Bratislava and sits right on the railway line, but as an all-day destination without a car it offers a church, a park and a museum, which is more of a two-hour programme. That is why this plan uses it as a fallback, not as the main goal.
Getting There: The S20 Train and Bus 289
The first leg is the S20 train, which Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko operates within IDS BK on the route Bratislava main station, Malacky, Kúty. According to the timetable valid from 1 July 2026, trains leave the main station alternately at 32 and 36 minutes past the hour and take 48 to 54 minutes to reach Malacky, with the same times on weekdays and at weekends.[1] The second leg is bus 289 run by Arriva, which starts right in front of the railway station in Malacky and, via Rohožník and Sološnica, reaches Plavecké Podhradie in 37 minutes.[2]
| Leg | Departs | Arrives | Service | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bratislava hl. st. → Malacky | 8:32 | 9:22 | S20 train | daily |
| Malacky, Žel. stanica → Plavecké Podhradie, Pod hradom | 9:37 | 10:14 | bus 289 | daily |
| Plavecké Podhradie, Pod hradom → Malacky, Žel. stanica | 14:38 | 15:18 | bus 289 | daily |
| Malacky → Bratislava hl. st. | 15:47 | 17:00 | S20 train | daily |
| Plavecké Podhradie, Pod hradom → Malacky, Žel. stanica | 16:38 | 17:18 | bus 289 | daily |
| Malacky → Bratislava hl. st. | 17:47 | 19:00 | S20 train | daily |
Times according to the IDS BK timetables: line S20 valid from 1 July 2026 and line 289 valid from 15 June 2026. Check them in the IDS BK app or on idsbk.sk before you travel, because some weekday services on line 289 do not run during school holidays.
The change in Malacky is 15 minutes, which is enough to walk from the platform to the bus stop in front of the station building without having to run. On the way back there is even more slack, because the bus reaches the station at 15:18 and the train leaves at 15:47, so the remaining 29 minutes can go on a coffee or a look around the station area. At weekends bus 289 leaves Malacky every two hours and on weekdays roughly every hour, but in both cases the 9:37 service exists, which is why the plan is built around it.[2]
Cyclobus 280 as a Seasonal Shortcut
In summer, a direct cyclobus 280 also runs from Bratislava to Plavecké Podhradie at weekends and on public holidays. It carries passengers without bikes too, and the standard IDS BK fare applies. In the 2026 season it ran from 30 May to 27 September, leaving Bajkalská at 8:05, 12:05 and 16:05, and returning from Plavecké Podhradie at 9:30, 13:30 and 17:30.[3] It is a more comfortable journey with no change, but three services a day force you to plan your return to the minute, and outside the season it does not exist at all. Whether it will run in 2027 you will find out in the spring in IDS BK announcements.
The Day's Timetable
The following plan assumes a relaxed pace, a break at the castle and some slack for the return bus. A fit hiker can do the whole educational trail instead of the short climb, but then you need to count on the 16:38 service and a return to Bratislava at 19:00.
| Time | What happens | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 8:15 | Arrival at the main station in Bratislava | buy your ticket in advance in the IDS BK app |
| 8:32 | S20 train departs towards Kúty | on the way you pass Devínska Nová Ves and Zohor |
| 9:22 | Arrival in Malacky | the bus stop is in front of the station building |
| 9:37 | Bus 289 departs | get off at Plavecké Podhradie, Pod hradom |
| 10:14 | Start of the climb along the blue trail | 40 minutes to an hour uphill |
| 11:00 to 12:30 | The castle: gate, towers, bastions, view over Záhorie | free entry, a snack from your own supplies |
| 12:30 to 14:00 | Descent and a stroll through the village or a detour to Pohanská | the village has the Centrum and Kaštieľ stops |
| 14:38 | Bus departs from the Pod hradom stop | backup service 16:38 |
| 15:47 | Train departs from Malacky | arrival in Bratislava at 17:00 |
Pack food and water for the whole day, because there is no refreshment at the castle itself or along the climb, and we would not rely on the village without checking opening hours first. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, as the final stretch below the walls is stony and also slippery in wet weather. For what else to pack for a trip from your apartment, see the article what to pack for a weekend in Bratislava.
What You Will See: The Castle, Pohanská and the Educational Trail
Plavecký Castle was built in the mid-13th century as a royal border fortress, and according to the village chronicle it was built by Detrich, the son of the Bratislava reeve Kunt, so it originally bore the name Detrichov kameň (Detrich's Stone). In the 14th century it probably belonged to the estates of Matúš Čák, later it was held by the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok, the Fuggers, as holders of the pledge, added a cannon bastion, and in the 17th century the Pálffy family took it over and strengthened the lower castle with another bastion. It was last fought over during the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi in 1705 and 1706, and after the damage it suffered then, nobody ever restored it.[6]
Today the gate tower still stands, along with the oldest 13th-century east tower of the core, walls with cannon bastions and loopholes, and the remains of a Gothic palace. A large part of the east castle tower collapsed back in the 1990s, which is why since 2012 the village has been gradually stabilising the walls using grants from the Obnovme si svoj dom programme, while Bratislava and Belgian scouts removed the self-seeded vegetation.[6] So when you visit, do not climb on walls outside the reinforced parts: the ruin is still a building site in motion, even though entry is not restricted.
Pohanská: The Celtic Hillfort Above the Castle
On the neighbouring hill of Pohanská, at 412 metres, a fortified settlement stood already in the late Bronze Age, and at the turn of the era the Celts built an oppidum here with ramparts and a separately fortified acropolis. Excavations between 1968 and 1971 turned up iron objects, a gate into the acropolis and a workshop for statuettes of Celtic deities, and the acropolis also holds the foundations of a Gothic church from around 1300.[7] The ramparts are still visible in the terrain today, so Pohanská is a natural continuation if you have an extra hour left after the castle.
The Plavecký kras Educational Trail for the Fit
If you want to get more out of the day, stay on bus 289 for another five minutes and get off at the Plavecký Mikuláš, Námestie stop. From there the Plavecký kras educational trail leads through the Mokrá dolina valley, the Deravá skala cave, the Mon Repos and Ámonova lúka sites and on to Plavecké Podhradie. It is 10 kilometres long, climbs 440 metres in total and takes four to five hours to walk.[8] Plavecký Castle is about 160 metres from the route along a side path, so you can add it at the end and then walk straight down to the bus. With this version, count on returning by the 16:38 service, because to catch the 14:38 one you would have to run the trail.
The IDS BK Ticket for Train and Bus
The whole trip takes place within the Integrated Transport System of the Bratislava Region, so one ticket is valid on the S20 train and on bus 289, and you buy it by the number of zones travelled. Bratislava has zones 100 and 101, Malacky lies in zone 231 and Plavecké Podhradie in zone 247, which you can see right in the timetables of both lines.[1] The simplest way is to enter the route from Bratislava to Plavecké Podhradie in the IDS BK app, which counts the zones itself, and the electronic ticket is ten percent cheaper than a paper one.
| IDS BK ticket | Paper | In the app | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single, 5 zones, 150 minutes | €3.50 | €3.11 | if the app counts 5 zones, you buy two, there and back |
| Single, 6 zones, 180 minutes | €4.00 | €3.63 | if the journey also passes through the large zone 111 |
| 24-hour, whole network | €8.60 | €7.80 | when you want to use city transport in Bratislava after you return |
Prices according to the IDS BK tariff valid from 1 June 2025, discounted tickets are half price. Check the price in the app before you travel, as the tariff may change.[4]
Watch out for two common mistakes. A ticket paid by bank card on board a city transport vehicle is valid only on city lines, so you cannot use it on the regional bus or on the train, and the same goes for an SMS ticket.[4] The second mistake is buying a ticket from the conductor on the train at the ZSSK tariff and then a second one on the bus, because that way you pay twice for what one IDS BK ticket can handle. How the whole system works and where tickets are sold is explained in our article on transport in Bratislava.
A Missed Connection and Plan B
With two connecting services, one is bound to slip away sooner or later. The good news is that no single missed connection in this plan means the end of the trip, only a different day.
- You missed the 8:32 train. The next one leaves at 9:36 and reaches Malacky at 10:24, where on a weekday you catch the bus at 10:37. At weekends, however, the next bus is not until 11:37, so you spend the hour in Malacky: the Franciscan church from 1653 with a copy of the Holy Stairs is a short walk from the station, and the town centre also has a renovated synagogue from 1886.[9]
- You missed the 14:38 bus. The next one leaves at 16:38 at weekends and at 15:38 or 16:38 on weekdays. The two hours in Plavecké Podhradie can go on a climb to the Pohanská ramparts or a quiet walk through the village past the Kaštieľ and Centrum stops.
- You are coming back late. The last service the plan safely counts on is the 18:38 bus and the 19:47 train from Malacky, arriving in Bratislava at 21:00. The 20:38 bus does exist, but the S20 timetable ends in Malacky with a 20:43 departure, so you would be waiting for a different type of train, which you need to check in advance on zssk.sk.
- Bad weather or a shorter day. Get off the train already in Devínska Nová Ves and head to Sandberg and Devínska Kobyla, which is the same direction on the same line, only twelve minutes from the main station. For more options depending on the weather, see the overview of day trips from Bratislava.
Where to Stay When You Travel by Train
For a day that begins at 8:32 at the main station, what matters more than the location of the apartment is that nothing holds you up in the morning. Our apartments have self check-in and no breakfast at a fixed time, so you get up according to the connection and not according to reception, and when you return you can cook dinner in the kitchenette without hunting for an open restaurant. How to plan an entire stay without a car, from the airport through city transport to day trips, is described in the article Bratislava without a car.
From the apartments in Bratislava you can reach the main station by public transport. To choose, CASTE on Zámocká below the castle is a good pick, with the station within a short ride, or SADBA on Ivánska cesta if you arrive from the airport and plan the trip for the next day. All the apartments have parking included, which you will appreciate even when you do have a car but leave it parked for Záhorie, because the train and bus take you right to the foot of the castle without hunting for a space in the village.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I get from Bratislava to Plavecký Castle without a car?
Take the S20 train from the main station to Malacky, then bus 289 to the Plavecké Podhradie, Pod hradom stop. According to the IDS BK timetables valid from summer 2026, the train leaves at 8:32 and arrives at 9:22, and the bus leaves at 9:37 and arrives at 10:14. This connection runs the same way on weekdays and at weekends. From the stop, a blue-marked trail leads up to the castle, and the climb takes 40 minutes to an hour.
How long does a day trip to Záhorie by train and bus take?
One way takes roughly an hour and three quarters including the change, that is 50 minutes by train and 37 minutes by bus. If you leave at 8:32 and come back on the 14:38 bus, you are back in Bratislava at 17:00; with the later 16:38 bus you arrive at 19:00. That leaves you four to six hours at the castle and around it.
What ticket do I need for the train and bus to Záhorie?
One IDS BK ticket based on the number of zones, valid on the S20 train and on bus 289. Bratislava has zones 100 and 101, Malacky is in zone 231 and Plavecké Podhradie in zone 247. The safest way is to enter your route in the IDS BK app, which counts the zones and sells an electronic ticket that is ten percent cheaper than a paper one. A ticket paid by card on board a vehicle and an SMS ticket are not valid on the regional bus or on the train.
What if I miss the bus from Malacky or the bus back?
From Malacky, bus 289 runs roughly every hour on weekdays and every two hours at weekends, so you can fill the wait with a walk to the Franciscan church and the synagogue in the town centre. On the way back, after the 14:38 bus there is another at 16:38 and the last safe one at 18:38, which catches the 19:47 train from Malacky and gets you to Bratislava at 21:00. Check any later connection on zssk.sk, because the S20 timetable ends in the evening.
Can I visit Plavecký Castle in winter or when it rains?
The ruins are freely accessible all year round and the connections run the same way, but the final stretch of the climb is stony and slippery when wet, so sturdy shoes are a must. In rain or snow we recommend a shorter day: get off already in Devínska Nová Ves for Sandberg, or postpone the trip and use the tips from our article on Bratislava in the rain.
Conclusion
A day trip to Záhorie without a car is not a compromise but a comfortable day with two connections that fit together the same way every day of the week. At 8:32 you board at the main station, at 10:14 you are standing below the castle, and at 17:00 you are back with the view over all of Záhorie in your memory and a single ticket in your pocket. Choose an apartment with self check-in, plan your morning around the train and not around reception, and Plavecký Castle will be your first trip from Bratislava that did not require even the keys to a car.
