Most of what needs doing before a trip to Bratislava can be handled from the sofa in a single evening, as long as you do it in the right order and not on the motorway or the station platform. This checklist runs from a week before you leave to the moment you open the apartment door: transport and arrival time, motorway vignette and parking, documents and insurance, phone apps and online check-in. What to put in your suitcase is covered in a separate article, What to Pack for a Weekend in Bratislava. Here the focus is on what you need to sort out so that you have nothing to catch up on when you get there.

The Checklist for Your Trip to Bratislava in One Table
The table sums up all the steps according to the best time to do them. Each row is explained further down, so if one does not apply to you, such as the motorway vignette when you are travelling by train, feel free to skip it.
| When | What to sort out | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days ahead | connection, arrival and departure times, and early check-in or late check-out if needed | the apartment is ready from 15:00 and must be vacated by 10:00 |
| 7 days ahead | validity of the ID card or passport for each person, including children | without a valid document, neither the journey nor online check-in will go through |
| 7 days ahead | European Health Insurance Card and travel insurance | the card covers only part of the cost of treatment |
| 3 days ahead | motorway vignette for the right days and licence plate number | the vignette is electronic and tied to the car's licence plate number |
| 3 days ahead | parking at the apartment and in the centre | in the centre you pay through the PAAS system, at the apartments you usually do not |
| the day before | public transport and parking apps, booking confirmation in your email | tickets and parking fees are easiest to pay on your phone |
| day of arrival | online check-in with your document, €100 deposit hold | the access details for the keys arrive only after check-in |
A Week Ahead: Connection, Arrival and Departure Times
The first item on the list is matching your arrival time to the check-in time, because this is exactly where needless hours on a bench with a suitcase come from. Check-in at our apartments is possible from 15:00 until midnight and check-out must be done by 10:00 at the latest, as stated on the Self check-in page. If your morning train or flight gets in before noon, you have two options: pay extra for an earlier arrival, or plan your day with your luggage left in storage.
In the booking form, early check-in means arriving from 14:00 and late check-out means leaving by 11:00, and late check-out must be arranged no later than 24 hours before departure. A bigger change is possible only by arrangement and depending on the apartment's occupancy, so sort it out as soon as you can, not on the day you travel. Where to leave your suitcase when the times cannot be moved is described in the article Luggage Storage in Bratislava: Where to Leave Your Bags Before Check-In and After Check-Out.
When choosing a connection, it is also worth looking at how you will get from the airport or station to the apartment, since not all of them are in the centre. An overview of airport lines and train and bus connections is in the article How to Get to Bratislava: Train, Car, Plane. If you land late in the evening, also read Arriving in Bratislava at Night in advance, because fewer services run at night and the journey to the apartment needs different planning than during the day.
By Car: Motorway Vignette and Parking at the Apartment
Motorways and expressways in Slovakia are tolled through an electronic motorway vignette, which is tied to the vehicle's licence plate number and does not come as a sticker. You can buy it on the eznamka.sk portal, in the app or at points of sale, and you need to buy it before you enter a tolled section. According to the price list on eznamka.sk, vignettes for vehicles up to 3.5 t cost the following:[2]
| Vignette validity | Price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | €8.10 | valid until 23:59:59 on the chosen day, suitable for only one journey there or back |
| 10 days | €10.80 | a weekend or a stay of up to 10 days, including the journey home |
| 30 days | €17.10 | a longer stay or several trips by car |
| 365 days | €90 | if you drive in Slovakia repeatedly during the year |
A ten-day vignette is valid for ten days including the day you choose as the first when you buy it, so on a weekend stay it covers the journey there and back, whereas two one-day vignettes would cost more. Check the licence plate number twice when you enter it, because checks are carried out by cameras and a wrong number means you have no vignette in the system. Prices can change, so check them directly on eznamka.sk before you buy. If you are travelling through Austria, Czechia or Hungary, they have their own motorway charges, which the Slovak vignette does not cover.
Parking at the apartment is the second point worth settling before you leave. According to their pages, all eight apartments have guest parking at no extra charge, but each arranges it differently: for example, CASTE below the castle has its own garage in the building and FIAOR has a private space by the building exit. Look up the exact spot on your apartment's page while you are still at home, not when you are already outside the building. If you also plan to drive into the centre, the citywide PAAS system applies there, with zones and hourly rates, and the article Parking in Bratislava: A Complete Guide for Visitors explains it in detail.
Documents, Payment Card and Health Insurance
An EU citizen travels to Bratislava with a valid ID card or passport, and the document must be valid on the day of travel. EU rules do not consider a driving licence, bank cards or other cards to be travel documents, and children need their own ID card or passport.[1] Documents are not routinely checked at borders within the Schengen area, but you must show them during temporary border checks or a police check on the spot.
You will also need your document for your stay, because under Act No. 253/1998 Coll., accommodation providers must keep a guest register with details from each guest's identity document.[5] With us this happens through online check-in, during which you upload your ID card or passport and take a selfie. If someone in your party has a document that is about to expire, get a new one before the trip, because check-in will not go through with an invalid document.
There are two things to keep in mind about your card. A stay bought on our website is paid in advance, including the city tax, which according to the city council is €3.50 per person per night in the Old Town of Bratislava and €3.00 in the other city districts,[4] so you do not pay it on site. During online check-in, however, a refundable €100 deposit is blocked on your card. It is not charged and is released on the 3rd day after departure provided there is no damage to the apartment, so leave room on your card for this hold.
Guests from EU countries are entitled to necessary healthcare through the European Health Insurance Card, which in some countries is issued together with the national health insurance card, while elsewhere you have to request it from your insurer.[3] The card is valid only with providers in the public system and does not cover things like transport home, so travel insurance is worth having as well. What to do if you do fall ill is described in the article Falling Ill During Your Stay in Bratislava.
The Day Before You Leave: Phone, Apps and Confirmation
The day before your trip is the best time to get your phone ready, because you will use it for most practical matters in Bratislava and you cannot do online check-in without it. It only takes a few minutes, but at the station with one bar of signal you would spend much longer on it.
- IDS BK app: you can buy tickets for city and suburban transport in and around Bratislava directly on your phone, as described in the article Transport in Bratislava.
- PAAS app: if you will be parking in the city's regulated zones, you can pay the parking fee in the app without looking for a machine.
- Booking confirmation: find the confirmation email and check the apartment, the dates and the number of guests, so that you can deal with any mistake while you are still at home.
- Apartment address on the map: save it offline so that you can get to it even without data.
- Charger and power bank: online check-in and the access details both come through your phone, so a flat battery is what will hold you up most on arrival.
On the Day of Arrival: Online Check-In and Access Details
The last item on the checklist is handled only on the day of arrival, when we send you a message with a link to the guest page. There you complete online check-in, which means uploading your document, taking a selfie and confirming the deposit hold, and only then do you receive the access details for the keys. The process usually takes a few minutes and is described in detail in the article Self Check-In: How It Works and Why It Saves Time.
It is worth doing online check-in while you are still on the train or waiting for your luggage, not at the door, because if something does not go through, you will have time to resolve it. You can then enter the apartment any time from 15:00, even late at night, and you do not have to wait for anyone. If you cannot find the message with the link on the day of arrival, even in your spam folder, contact us through the website.
If you are still choosing your dates and apartment, the whole process from calendar to payment is in the article Booking an Apartment in Bratislava: A Step-by-Step Guide, and once you are here, What to Sort Out After Arriving in Bratislava will help.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What do I need to sort out before a trip to Bratislava?
A week ahead, check your connection and arrival time, the validity of your ID card or passport, and your health insurance. If you are coming by car, buy an electronic motorway vignette and find out where you will park. The day before, set up your phone with the public transport and parking apps, and on the day of arrival you complete online check-in.
Is an ID card enough for a trip to Bratislava?
For EU citizens, a valid ID card or passport is enough, and it must be valid on the day of travel. A driving licence or bank cards do not count as travel documents, and children need their own document. You then upload the same document during online check-in for the apartment.
Do I need a motorway vignette if I drive to Bratislava?
Yes, if you will be using a motorway or expressway, you need an electronic motorway vignette bought in advance on eznamka.sk or at a point of sale. For a car up to 3.5 t, a one-day vignette costs €8.10, a ten-day one €10.80 and a thirty-day one €17.10, but check the prices before you buy.
When will I receive the access details for the apartment?
On the day of arrival we will send you a message with a link to online check-in, where you upload your document, take a selfie and confirm the €100 deposit hold. You receive the access details for the keys as soon as check-in is complete, and you can enter the apartment any time from 15:00.
Can I arrive at the apartment earlier than 15:00?
You can pay extra for an earlier arrival from 14:00 in the form when you book. A bigger change is possible only by arrangement and depending on the apartment's occupancy, so sort it out as soon as you can, and if it is not possible, you can leave your luggage in storage.
Conclusion
The checklist before your trip to Bratislava has five stops: an arrival time matched to check-in, a motorway vignette and parking, valid documents with insurance, a phone that is ready, and online check-in on the day of arrival. Go through them in this order, and when you get there, all that is left is to walk into the apartment and start your stay. If you do not have your dates yet, take a look at availability or all eight apartments.
